Six habits may protect Men from Prostate Cancer- Recent Studies at European Cancer Congress:

Jojy Cheriyan MD;MPH-October 1,2013

Men who have a family history of Prostate Cancer, or looking to reduce their risk of dying from prostate cancer, should follow at least 5 of the 6 habits, according to two studies presented at the European Cancer Congress in Amsterdam on Sunday (September 29,2013).

Previous studies have reported the risk of prostate cancer linked to smoking, red meat consumption etc, but no study has even been done to link these habits that can jointly give better protection than individual effect.

The six habits proved to be helpful in reducing the risk of Prostate cancer are-
1. Eating more tomatoes
2. Eating more fatty fish (since they have more Omega 3 fatty acids)
3. Eating less processed meat (Red meat increases risk)
4. Exercising
5. Not Smoking
6. Keeping Body Mass Index(BMI) less than 30.

Researchers at University of California found that men who adopted these 5 or 6 habits had a 39 percent lower risk of developing lethal prostate cancer than those who adopted one or none of these habits.

The data used in these studies are robust. Information about 46,000 men  for 25 years was analyzed in the study that reported 39 percent reduction in risk. In another study 21,000 men were followed, that showed 47 percent risk reduction for prostate cancer, among those who adopted 5 or 6 habits. One study also reported that men who adopted only the dietary habits had a 27 percent lower risk of lethal prostate cancer than those who adopted none.

Scientists are now studying which elements play the most important role in reducing cancer risk.

Tomatoes contain Lycopene, an antioxidant that can block the action of destructive free radicals, and studies have proven the anticancer effect of Lycopene.

Even though  genes play some role in causing hereditary risk for prostate cancer, some scientists believe that life style changes can hinder or delay the impact of genes. It is a common saying that "Genes load the gun but lifestyle pulls the trigger".

Encouraging men and counseling men to adopt these 6 habits can improve their overall health and reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
(NB: These studies have been presented only in a conference, not yet published in peer-reviewed journals)
