With or Without Diabetes, High Blood Glucose may cause Dementia:

Jojy Cheriyan MD;MPH September 23,2013
Eating too much sugar may lead to dementia in persons with or without diabetes. Previous studies have shown positive correlation between dementia and high blood sugar among diabetic patients. But a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on August 8,2013 reports that high glucose levels may be a risk factor for dementia, even among persons without diabetes.

Researchers examined 35,264 lab measurements of glucose levels and 10,208 measurements of Glycated hemoglobin (Hb A1C) levels from 2,067 participants (which included 1,228 women) without dementia. The mean age of participants was 76 years. Of the total population, 232 had diabetes. After following these participants for a mean period of 6.8 years, the researchers found that 450 participants without diabetes developed dementia. Among the 232 participants who had diabetes, 72 developed dementia.

The analysis of this study shows that having a higher glucose level (above average) for a period of 5 years can significantly increase the risk of dementia. A glucose level of 115mg/dL, compared with 100 mg/dL, was associated with higher chance of developing dementia (Hazard Ratio 1.18).
