Dozens of women were abandoned unconscious in a dirty field around the hospital after being sterilized at a rural health center in India.
Two doctors carried out 106 sterilization operations in a single day at government-run Manikchak Rural Hospital in West Bengal as part of mass Sterilization Drive.
Women were then left on the ground outside the hospital, under open sky, with no medical assistance or protection against infections. Many were crying with pain., and helpless relatives were cooling the patients by fanning with their own clothes, under scorching sun.
Hospital officials made a ridiculous excuse saying, they had only 30 beds for female patients and women were moved to the ground since they didn't have enough space.
Human rights activists and media all over the world expressed shock and anger against this unethical and inhuman incident.
The speed of the operations left medical experts also extremely concerned - one sterilization operation usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. The first 3 hours are critical after sterilization surgery and patient should be given medical observation as there are high chances of complications including death due to anesthesia.
This occurred in the constituency of the Child Development Minister Sabriti Mitra who is also the local MLA.The Minister later said: ‘This irresponsible act will not be tolerated. The government is looking into it and necessary action would be taken.’
The sterilization drive broke a number of rules regarding health and safety procedures, drastically overstepping the State Government's limit of 25 sterilizations per day and ignoring the three hours of observation
The doctors at the government-run hospital are now under investigation and one health officer has been suspended.
