A Catholic Bishop makes diabolic comment supporting homosexuality:

A Roman Catholic Bishop in Mexico named Bishop Raul Vera Lopez ( famous as Bishop Vera) said this week, in an interview to a Television Network Terra Mexico, that "all people who oppose homosexuality are mentally ill".

Even though he believes in the 'notion' that homosexuality occurs due to hormonal imbalances in the uterus, he spoke out forcefully against religious based homophobia, and calling homophobes the perverse ones.

In his interview he narrated an incident of a worried mother who approached him for help to save her son who was hanging out with gay friends. These are the words he stated -

"One mother came to me and said that she was being watchful of her son because he was hanging out with “those degenerate gays” and I said “so blame yourself for it because that’s the way your son developed in your womb and he didn’t develop into a degenerate or a perverse person. He was born with a certain constitution you are trying to ignore. Calm down, you are the mother of that child and he began to be who he now is inside your womb. So the first one I’d kick out would be you because you are the perverse one who is first in line.” That’s what I said.

In the past Bishop Vera was under scrutiny by Vatican for his human rights work and his support of civil unions for same-sex couples.

Catholics around the world condemned his statement. Some people commented that the biggest problem was not justifying something by misinterpreting the bible but rather having a Bishop put himself above the Church and above God by disobeying clear Church teachings. Some said, "Bishop Vera has contradicted the Magisterium and the Papacy of the Church, not to mention the authority bestowed upon his office by God for the salvation of souls. Whatever charity works or social works he does are undermined by his support to grave sins". Some called him Bishop Judas who betrayed Catholic church.

There is no scientific evidence that hormonal imbalances that occur in the womb leads to homosexuality. Therefore what Bishop Vera said to the woman is stupid and evil. How could a mother be blamed for the sexual orientation of her son? Also no scientific evidence that a "homosexuality gene" exists which is responsible for homosexual behavior. So the claim that it is inherited from parents makes no sense.

Even though the Bible does not say anything against homosexuality, it specifically says homosexual acts are immoral and grave sins. Catholic church does not promote prejudice or discrimination against homosexuals, but teaches homosexual acts are grave sins and evil acts.

There is no consensus among scientists around the world , about the causes of why a person develops a homosexual orientation. Until 1970's it was defined as a mental illness or sexual disorder, deviated from normal sexual behavior. The 'bible' of psychiatrists and psychologists called DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) classified homosexuality as the number one paraphilia until 1973, when American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from paraphilia classification and changed it as a variant of normal sexuality. Some critics blamed it as politically motivated. As the political outlook based on secularism, freedom and human rights expanded, homosexuality gained a political definition rooted in equality. (Originally 'paraphilia' included homosexuality, pedophilia, zoophilia, sexual sadism, exhibitionism etc in the DSM classification).

Now some dictionaries define homosexuality as one among the three sexual orientations (homosexuality, heterosexuality and bisexuality) and refers homosexuality as a disposition to experience sexual, affectionate, or romantic attractions primarily or exclusively to people of the same sex or gender. Recently Oxford Dictionary also stated that they were going to change the definition of homosexuality.

But scientific studies have shown that HIV/AIDS and STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) are at high rate among gays. Medical community is also divided in accepting homosexual acts as normal behavior and expressed concerns about the health of gay people involved in homosexual acts.

Gay community in the United states constitute 2% of the population, but they are accounted for the 63% of new HIV infections in 2010 (quoted in a joint letter by 35 leaders of LGBT groups in America, reported in a news paper The Record on July 19,2013)
