New electric car company Faraday Future has revealed its first model, which it claims will be the fastest accelerating EV in the world and comes with autonomous features.

Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, the FF91 has a claimed 0-60mph figure of 2.39 seconds. Power comes from a 1,050bhp electric motor that delivers 1,800Nm of torque, with power fed from a 130kWh battery.

The FF91 also comes with a claimed range of more than 378 miles, giving it almost twice as much range as the average Tesla Model S if accurate. It is currently powered by conventional wired charging, but will have the capability to be charged wirelessly in the future.

The major talking point here, though, is the autonomous driving technology. It comes with a retractable 3D LIDAR detector disc, 10 HD cameras, 13 long- and short-range radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors that Faraday Future claims will allow the car to drive itself.

However, during the on-stage demonstration the car refused to budge when prompted, making for an awkward few minutes as an engineer tried to fix the problem.

Its exciting sci-fi SUV styling might prove divisive, while its size will certainly be off-putting for some – at 3,200mm long it's bigger than a Mercedes S-Class.

The cabin is huge, amplified by the large areas of glass surrounding it. Further proving its futuristic credentials, the FF91 has polymer dispersed liquid crystal glass, which allows passengers to tap the surface to change the level of tint.

Production isn't set to begin until 2018, but prospective buyers can place a refundable $5,000 (£4,000) deposit now. Bosses have refused to give a list price yet, saying it will be in line with a premium flagship model.
